I would like to honor Uncle David and remember him by reflecting on the legacy he left behind.
I came into this family nearly 18 years ago, and a huge part of getting to know David was getting to know his wife, Aunt Sherri, whom I have adored since the day I met her. I have always valued and looked up to the loving family and marriage they represented. Their relationship was built on selflessness, devotion, and a deep, enduring love for one another.
As both a niece and a nurse who had the privilege of witnessing David’s journey through illness, I made it my mission to advocate for both of them, especially from a medical perspective. Sherri was David’s biggest fan, fiercest advocate, and most devoted caregiver. As was mentioned during his service, she never missed a beat. Not a single day went by that she wasn’t by his side, whether at home or in the hospital.
One memory that will forever stay with me is visiting David in the hospital. I knew Sherri was emotionally exhausted and carrying a weight that few could truly understand. Yet there she stood at his bedside, gently shaving his face for him. It was such a simple act, but it spoke volumes about the love she had for him. In that moment, she seemed almost angelic—an example of love in its purest form.
Patients need advocates, but sometimes we forget that their spouses do too. Many of us tried our best to be that support for Sherri as she tirelessly cared for David.
Another moment that remains vivid in my mind was after David passed. At his visitation, I turned around and saw a group of his nurses walk through the door. They sat with Sherri and watched the entire slideshow honoring his life. That deeply moved me. It represented not only the impact they had on David and Sherri, but the profound impact David had on his medical team. He was such a special person that the nurses who cared for him came to pay their respects. That is a remarkable legacy to leave behind.
On the difficult days ahead, I hope Sherri and the family can hold that close to their hearts. The love that David and Sherri shared touched everyone who knew them. Their trademark of love, loyalty, and devotion will continue to live on through the memories they created together.
David was a man to be admired, respected, and loved. The life he lived and the person he was are something to be incredibly proud of. His legacy will continue to shine through the countless lives he touched.
