Troy N. Poteet's Obituary
Troy Norman Poteet was born on January 29, 1937 in Littlefield, TX to Fred and Virgie Poteet. He attended school in Greenville Texas until moving to Daingerfield Texas where he graduated high school in 1955. Following high school he enlisted in the United States Navy in July of 1955. Troy began his service in San Diego, CA and ended his service aboard the USS LYSPEAR, retiring in July of 1974. While in the service he was Honor guard UN Far East in Japan, was a Navy recruiter in Longview, TX and served aboard the USS Robinson, USS CADMUS, and the USS LYSPEAR. He was awarded numerous good conduct medals while serving.
Mr. Poteet continued to show his strong patriotism by becoming an active member of the Fleet Reserve Association for over 25 years. He served in many officer positions during those years and was President of the South Central Region. He was also a member of the Longview Elks Lodge and held numerous officer positions there.
Troy was married to Jo Lacy on June 13, 1968 in Longview and they were married for 44 years until she preceded him in death on Jan. 25, 2012. Troy and Jo lived in Longview, Houston, and Bogota Columbia, before retiring and finally returning back home to Longview in 1999 upon his retirement from British Petroleum. Troy and his high school sweetheart, Charlotte Moore, reunited and married on March 2, 2013 in Daingerfield, TX. Their time together was brief, but their love will be eternal. He was a member of Mobberly Baptist Church until he and Charlotte married where he joined South Union Missionary Baptist Church of Daingerfield.
Mr. Poteet was a devoted husband, son, father and grandfather. He loved the Lord and often found great comfort during his last days by reading his Bible or having his precious wife Charlotte read to him. He loved his family, animals, country and home. He was able to spend his last day in his home with love and support from family friends and Faith Hospice.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Lacy Poteet; his parents; his brothers Jimmy and Sonny Poteet; and his sisters Helen Lacy and Billie Keller. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife Charlotte Moore Poteet of Daingerfield; his son Dennis McCarty of Hot Springs, AR; his daughter Nancy Taylor of Longview; his grandchildren Jeremy McCarty of Fullerton, CA, Joshua McCarty and wife Leah of Dallas, Jonathan McCarty and wife Ashley of Dallas, PA, Jessica Johnson and husband Matthew of Dallas, Laura Dickerson of Longview and Sarah Dickerson Pursley and husband Ryan of Dallas; 6 great grandchildren; his step children, Luane Williams of Daingerfield, TX and Bryan Moore of Hewitt, TX; and 4 step grandchildren Bryan and Brent Mattox and Brittany and Dylan Moore.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Friday, September 26, 2014 at South Union Baptist Church in Daingerfield with Pastor Chad Thompson and Donald Roy Vaughn officiating. Burial will follow at Rosewood Park in Longview. Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. Mr. Poteet passed away Tuesday morning at his home in Longview. The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 6-8 PM at the funeral home.
