Steven Tehan's Obituary
With his wife and son by his side, Steven Craig Tehan (60) went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday March 25, 2014, after losing his battle with lung cancer.
Steve was born on April 20, 1953 in Laramie, Wyoming to A.L. and Dorothy Tehan. After moving to several locations across Oklahoma, Louisiana and South Texas, the Tehans made their way to Longview in 1955 where Steve and his siblings Laura, and Walter grew up.
Steve was a product of the Pine Tree Independent School District and graduated in 1971. He attended East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas, and then transferred to Kilgore College in Kilgore, Texas. Even though he was accepted to the Julliard School of Music, Steve chose to follow in his father’s footsteps, and began his career in the oil field instead.
Across the East Texas oil and gas industry, Steve was known as a man of honesty and integrity. Because of this, he carried business relationships with him across multiple employments. He was also an avid hunter and outdoorsman. He especially loved bird hunting with his many friends, from Nebraska to South Texas.
Steve’s greatest love, however, was music. He was a very talented singer and guitarist.
Throughout his adult life, Steve played and sang with numerous bands, ensembles, and quartets. Of all the groups that he had the privilege of playing with, none of those compare to helping to lead others in worship before the Lord every Sunday with the praise band at New Beginnings Baptist Church.
Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Dorothy Tehan, and his uncle, Tom Tehan. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Tammy Tehan of Longview, his son Michael Tehan, of Longview, his daughter, Katie Weaver of Longview, his brother and sister-in-law, Walter and Cathie Lou Tehan of Liberty City, his brother-in-law and sister, Paul and Laura Trotter of Bullard, his father and stepmother, A. “Archie” L. and Peggy Tehan of Longview, his stepbrother and stepsister-in-law, Kelly and Donna Freeman of Henderson, his stepsister Rene Brewer of Garland, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Bud and Nancy Rossow of Lacey, Washington, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Terrence and Kathy Woodward of Portland, Oregon, his brother-in-law, David Hunt of Minnesota, his brother-in-law, Mark Walker of College Station, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Matthew and Samantha Walker of Hallsville, his sister-in-law, Heather Walker of College Station, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Cary and Sheila Walker of Plano, his stepfather-in-law and stepmother-in-law, Jack and Vicki Killgo of Hallsville, numerous nieces and nephews, and one granddaughter.
Pallbearers will include Michael Austell, Steve Gillentine, Jay Cook, Paul Trotter, Walter Tehan, and Michael Tehan.
The family will receive visitors on Saturday March 29, 2014 beginning at 12:00pm at New Beginnings Baptist Church with the funeral service immediately following at 2:00 pm with the Rev. Todd Kaunitz officiating. Burial will follow at the Welch Cemetery in Brachfield under direction of Rader Funeral Home.
Steve has certainly left his mark in the community, and area in general, and will be deeply missed by his family, his friends, and his colleagues.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations are made either to New Beginnings Baptist Church, the American Diabetes Association, or the American Cancer Society, in memory of Steve Tehan.
