Shirley H. Kastrop's Obituary
Services for Shirley H. Kastrop, 76, of Longview, will be held 2 PM Monday, March 24, 2008 in the chapel of Rader Funeral Home in Longview with Dr. Keith Rothra officiating. Interment will follow in Memory Park Cemetery in Longview. Mrs. Kastrop passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008 in Kissimmee, Florida, while visiting her daughter.Mrs. Kastrop was born January 16, 1932 in New Orleans, LA. where her parents owned and operated a neighborhood hardware and general merchandise store, in which she and her brother helped out after school. She attended P. A. Capdau Elementary School and was graduated in 1950 from John McDonough all girl public high school. After graduation she worked as a general clerk for a finance company, then joined Southern Bell Telephone and worked in accounting until 1955 when she transferred to Miami, FL with the telephone company until 1957. Later she worked for a large department store in Miami. In 1963 she returned to New Orleans and in 1965 worked for the Boeing Company during the Apollo IV program and as a second job in accounting at Sears. In 1968 she moved back to Florida to work for a firm in the aircraft industry and also worked another second job for a discount jewelry store where she was until she came to Longview in 1977. Here she worked for several firms in an accounting position, including Moore Bros. Lumber Co. and 281 Lumber. After her marriage to J. E. "Hank" Kastropshe became a housewife and was involved in community affairs and later in political interests with her husband. She was noted for her generosity and concern for all her friends…taking some on short trips and frequently visiting friends confined inside. She loved games of all sorts..on TV..even the casinos in Louisiana. Her big concern in all ways was her family. Mrs. Kastrop is survived by her husband, J. E. "Hank" Kastrop of Longview; two daughters and their spouses, Joanne and Greg Abernathy of Rockledge, FL, Lucy and Cecil Maxwell of Longview and step-son and spouse Kye and Karen Kastrop of DeSoto, TX; one granddaughter, Cassandra Abernathy of Rockledge, FL, and two grandsons, Justin Lee and Jacob Ross Maxwell of Longview; two step-granddaughters, Kristin Minden of Mansfield, TX and Kourtney Kastrop of Austin, TX; her brother, Julius H. Helfritsh of Mandeville, LA. Also, several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Kenneth Kastrop. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3-5 PM Sunday afternoon.
