Robert E. Ransom's Obituary
Funeral services for Robert E. Ransom, 62, of Longview, formerly of Indiana, will be held at 12 Noon on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
Corporal Robert Eugene Ransom, Nov. 1953 – Sept. 2016 was born in Nottoway County, Virginia at Camp Pickett Army base to Charlotte and Roy Ransom.
Robert graduated from Valparaiso High school in Indiana, and received a Bachelor of Construction Engineering degree from Purdue University. After trying to have an interest in other fields, he found his love, serving others as a police officer. He joined the Porter County Sheriff’s Department in Indiana retiring after more than twenty-five years of service. Areas of service included Patrolman, Chief Warrant Officer, S.W.A.T. member, Fire Arms and Underwater Recovery Instructor. He received numerous awards for his marksmanship abilities, including the Indiana Governor’s Top 20 List for top sharpshooter. He received the nickname “Beef” while helping to apprehend a suspect when officers needed assistance and one said “where’s the beef?”, calling for his help. He is still fondly remembered by this. Rob was destined to live in Texas. His love for Texas began when he attended the Cotton Bowl as part of the Porter County Mounted Posse. He moved to Texas in 2005 after retiring from Porter County, and joined the Gregg County Sheriff’s Department serving as a Jailer.
He spent his life loving his family, and enjoyed anything to do with firearms, water sports, traveling, firearms, animals, building, anything to do with tending the farm, firearms, serving others, and firearms! He loved to laugh, and blessed everyone that came in to contact with him. Robert will be sorely missed by all that knew and loved him.
He was preceeded in death by his parents. He is survived by two brothers, Charles Ransom and David Ransom (and wife Barbara), a niece – Kathleen Ransom Cuson and husband Andy, former wife, Maddy Gunn and children: Jennifer and husband B.J. Smith, Jason Gunn and wife Vanessa, Krista Martin and husband Rusty; and former wife Debra Ransom and daughter, Mandy and husband Shawn Thornburg, and grandchildren: Michela Devendorf, Catarina & Trinity Tamez, Orion Macy, Levi Gunn, Hannah & Allie Martin, Hailey, Ashley, and Hunter Thornburg. – many family, friend’s and his family of fellow officers.
