He was born in Fort Worth, Texas to Judge Clarence and Dorothy McGaw and moved to Longview at two months of age. After graduating from Longview High Scool in 1948 he attended Texas A&M University, graduating with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and a commission in the army as Second Lieutenant. The Korean War was winding down so he was given a year before entering the service which he spent working for American Oil Pipeline in Longview.
After returning from the service he went to work for Lone Star Steel Company in the Engineering Department where he worked throughout the plant and held positions of Chief Mechanical Engineer, Plant Engineering Manager, Business Consultant and Manager of Process Engineering. He married Sue Hill in 1951 while attending college and she earned her PHTS (Putting Hubby through School) degree (with honors). He joined First Christian Church in 1956 to be with his wife where they soon became involved, becoming youth leaders for a short period. Then he taught ninth grade Sunday School, and he and Sue lead a young couples discussion group for several years.
He served at various times on Education, Outreach and Property Committees and even chaired the Outreach and Property Committee. He served as Chairman of the Board three times, and Chairman of the Elders. In 2002 he was installed as an Honorary Elder for life of the First Christian Church of Longview. He loved his Cornerstone Sunday School Class.
Bob will be missed by many, but he is now swaying to the sounds of Glenn Miller with Sue in his arms, above the stars.
