In Loving Memory of Richard Howard Thornhill
Richard Howard Thornhill, age 79, of Longview, Texas, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, surrounded by family and loved ones in the comfort of his home.
Richard was born on June 15, 1946, in Mesquite, Texas, to Hubert Washington Thornhill and Ethel Louise Thornhill. He carried with him throughout his life the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion that were instilled in him from an early age.
He earned his bachelor’s degree and went on to build a meaningful career as a compassionate consumer lender. Richard was known not only for his professionalism, but for the genuine care and understanding he showed to those he served. He believed in helping others succeed and approached his work—and his life—with empathy and kindness.
Richard found joy in the simple and meaningful things. He loved woodworking, creating with his hands and leaving behind pieces that will be cherished for years to come. He was an avid reader who devoured books, had a deep appreciation for classical music, and took great pleasure in cooking for those he loved. His home was often filled with warmth, conversation, and the comfort of a shared meal.
A lifelong learner and adventurer, Richard had a passion for travel that took him across 42 countries. He embraced different cultures, formed meaningful connections around the world, and carried those experiences with him, enriching both his life and the lives of those he shared them with. Richard’s generosity reached far beyond his immediate family.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Brenda Faye Thornhill; Teemu Kalliokoski of Finland, along with his wife, Mervi, and their children, Elias and Iiris; Karen Dilday, her husband, Randy, and their children, Alan and Oliver; as well as many other international students whose lives he profoundly influenced. Richard had a remarkable gift for welcoming others as family, offering guidance, encouragement, and a genuine sense of belonging that left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
Richard will be remembered for his kind heart, gentle wisdom, and the quiet strength with which he lived his life. His legacy is one of love, generosity, and the countless lives he enriched along the way.
Above all, Richard was a devoted and loving husband to his beloved wife, Brenda. Their life together was built on love, partnership, and unwavering support.
He will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
A Celebration of Richards life will be held in the chapel at Rader Funeral Home in Longview Saturday, April 4, 2026, starting at 2pm. A time of visitation will begin one hour prior to the service.
