Nelda Casey was an amazing woman, and I was fortunate that she was one of the many wonderful aunts who have blessed my life.
She was a dedicated parent and grandparent, a point underscored in the lives of the children and grandchildren who are her legacy, and she was just an awesome person.
Nelda was generous — when I was in college and needed to park my car somewhere for a few weeks when I went home, she let me leave it at her house. She was a great hostess — parties at her home were always memorable get-togethers. And she was top notch when it came to playing games — having Nelda as your Spades partner gave you a clear advantage over the competition.
Mom keeps one of Nelda’s ceramics in the living room of her house. It’s a Victorian lady’s walking boot with a black toe, Louis heel, and side buttons against a gleaming white upper. That ceramic is one of my favorite things, both because of its beauty and because Nelda made it. She was creative and generous with her art.
She was brave, too. Life sent her challenges, and she met them all — every one of them.
In that way, she was a model for all of us, and we are better for having had her presence in our lives.
