Mary Helen Martin
Mary Helen Martin of Hallsville passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on November 23, 2015. She was 88.
She was born to Doris and Theron Merritt on her parents farm in Milfort, Saskatchewan , Canada and moved to Iowa in 1930 where she graduated from Newton High School and then attended Iowa State University.
In 1951, she moved to Longview, Texas where she met her husband Jack, while they were both employed at the Longview News. They were blessed with three children, Ginny, Chuck and Joani.
Mary was employed by the Hallsville School system for many years and is fondly remembered by the many students and fellow staff members whose lives she touched. Mary was a fixture on her family farm, greeting customers at Martin Berry Patch with her husband Jack for more than 20 years. She enjoyed spending time with her family especially her grandchildren. She had an adventurous spirit, a deep faith, a love of rural life and a kind word for everyone she met.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jack Martin of Hallsville, her daughter Ginny Caligiuri ( Tony) of Osceola, Iowa, her son, Chuck Martin (Laura) of College Station, her daughter Joani, (Ed) of Mesa Arizona, sister Lorraine Taylor of Annandale, Virginia, grandsons, Taaffe Caligiuri and Joe Macey, granddaughters Hannah Ortega (Martin) and Madison Castillo and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters.
Services will be on Friday, November 27th at First Methodist Church in Hallsville. Burial will follow in Memory Park under the direction of Rader Funeral home of Longview. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM followed by the funeral service at 11:00 AM.
