Mothers are subject to a lot of bad jokes as their children marry off, but in 46 years I never heard a mother-in-law joke that befitted Mary. I seem to have lucked out, undeservingly, with one of the best moms-in-law in history. She straightened me out as necessary (Don’t mess with the white tornado!), but was from beginning to end a kind, loving, wise, supportive and generous mother, mother-in-law, grandma and great grandma.
I could go on, but will simply note that her gifts keep on giving. Her dear daughter, Alicia, now a mother-in-law and grandma herself, is absolutely extraordinary in every role, as our little ones will someday realize and declare. Alicia’s care-giving attitude, loving ways and teacher’s heart may be innate, but I credit Mary for her thoughtful guidance and nurture during Alicia’s formative years. Our children will long reflect on how fortunate they have been to have had two generations of tremendous women as guides, and are likely someday to become special grandparents themselves!
A note of appreciation is also due Grandpa Guy. What a terrific gentleman, dad-in-law and grandpa! I am blessed to have had to get married only once to experience two extraordinary fathers-in-law! Thank you, Mom. Your spirit still lifts. God be with you!
