I remember Dr. Mary from my Internal Family Systems training as a bright, funny, generous, loving and very smart colleague. She was the only neuropsychologist in a group of trainees who were mostly social workers and licensed mental health workers, but her doctorate and more extensive training never made Mary arrogant. She was welcoming and friendly to all.
When I had a question or concern about a client with whom I was working, Mary willingly and generously gave of her time and expertise, making suggestions and offering resources to me that were extremely helpful and insightful. Her deep commitment to the children she served was evident in the way she spoke of them. Her grasp of the brain and how it worked -- or didn't work! -- and how to help it work better, was considerable and impressive.
Mary had a way of making those around her feel at ease. Her loving yet direct sense of humor kept our group laughing, and lightened up tough or tense times for us.
I had NO idea that Mary struggled with mental illness until after her death. I immediately thought that there was no better way for our Level 1 IFS training group to pay her tribute than to donate to the IFS Research Institute, so that others who are afflicted with such struggles might find a happier outcome. I know Mary would be rooting for us all in that endeavor.
Thank you, Mary, for all you taught us and all you have given to us!
Sherry Zitter, Licensed Social Worker, Mass.
