Cookie was born on August 17, 1921, in Overton, Texas, the daughter of Judson and Sue Ann Wyche. She survived the New London School explosion of 1937, a disaster that took the lives of half of the students. She recovered from back injuries and became the Valedictorian of her graduating class the following year. After graduating from the Texas State College for Women with a Bachelor of Science in 1943, Cookie began her career as a hospital dietitian. In July 1947, she married Dr. Cecil Albert Johnson and moved to Longview a few years later. She was a devoted wife and loving mother of two sons. She was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Longview and faith played a big role in her life and in the life of her family.
After raising their sons, Cookie continued her career as a dietitian, consulting for area nursing homes. She also enjoyed quiet time with many hobbies including cooking, entertaining, gardening, painting, pottery, sewing and travelling. She was a member of the Longview Art Guild, a member and past President of the Longview Garden Club and a member of the Longview Regional Medical Center Auxiliary. The family spent many happy vacations in the mountains of Colorado, and after retirement, she enjoyed travelling the world with family and friends.
Marilyn is survived by her son, Michael David Johnson and wife Coleen of Leander; son, Jim Scott Johnson and wife Susan of Plano; grandchildren, Craig Johnson of Orlando, Florida and Laura Johnson Pitcher and husband David of The Colony; sister-in-law, Virginia Wellman of Duncanville; nephew, Mark Cohagen and wife Joan of Denton; nieces, Terry Huntsberger of Grand Prairie, Lindee Westbrook of DeSoto and Leesa Galloway of Seattle, Washington; and several grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
