Lillie Iola Schomerus' Obituary
Lillie Iola Lofton Schomerus, 106, of Longview, Texas, went to be with the Lord at her home on Tuesday, March 15, 2005. The family will receive friends Thursday, March 17, at 6:30 to 8:00 pm at Radar Funeral Home in Longview, Texas, and Friday, March 18, at 6:00 to 8:00pm, at Corley Funeral Home in Corsicana, Texas. Services will be held at 2pm, March 19, at Corley Funeral Home with burial to follow at Hamilton-Beeman Cemetery in Corsicana.
Mrs. Schomerus was born December 11, 1898 to Lincoln Daniel Lofton and Rosa Belle Cantrell Lofton in Portland, Texas. Her ancestry includes early Virginia colonists who settled near Jamestown in 1642, and early settlers in Philadelphia. Her great grandfather helped settle Sachse and Murphy townships near Dallas, Texas.
Mrs. Schomerus was married to Weert Sassen Schomerus on May 20, 1914 in Bazette, Texas. They were married for 74 years. In 1975 they moved from Corsicana, Texas to Longview, Texas where Mr. Schomerus died in 1988. At the time of Mrs. Schomerus death, she was the oldest person in the world to carry the Schomerus name.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Schomerus was preceded in death by two sons, Jesse R. Schomerus and Densil W. Schomerus; grandsons, William D. Whitaker and David R. Schomerus; great great granddaughter, Grace K. Haralson; daughter-in-law, Louise Schomerus; and son-in-law, Ralph Antill.
?Mamma? as she was affectionately known by her family and friends, loved to garden, cook, fish, and make beautiful quilts, but her greatest legacy was that of a Christian heritage and prayer. The memory of her love and unselfishness will continue to live in the hearts and memories of her family. Family and friends have been blessed by her wisdom, faith, sweet smile, and gentle spirit. She loved God and was a long time member of the First Assembly of God church in Corsicana, Texas.
She is survived by three children: Virginia Antill of Corsicana, Texas; William D. Schomerus and wife Marilyn of West Tawakoni, Texas; and I. Frances Phillips and husband Glenn Phillips of Longview, Texas; daughter-in-law Norma Jean Schomerus of Beaumont, Texas; nine grandchildren: Virginia Ward and husband Morris of Athens, Texas; Ronnie Schomerus and wife Jacque of Tyler, Texas; Gay Thompson and husband Johnny of Tucson, Arizona; Mark Schomerus and wife Shirley of Nederland, Texas; Brenda Slaughter and husband Dale of Reno, Nevada; Mike Schomerus and wife Kay of West Tawakoni, Texas; Sherry Schomerus of Quinlan, Texas; J. Bradley Phillips and wife Tricia of Rockwall, Texas; S. Michelle Scheef and husband John of Frisco, Texas; granddaughter-in-law Hilla Whitaker of West Hills, California; and granddaughter-in-law Sandra Schomerus of Moore, Oklahoma. Survivors also include twenty-six great grandchildren, fifteen great great grandchildren, a sister Ruby Hunsucker of Lansing, Michigan, and numerous nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express its special appreciation to the numerous ones who helped care for ?mamma?s? needs, including Rozy Wyatt, Ila Rhee Ford, Margie Hamm, Gail Jester and Joan Haymes of Lifecare Hospice, and Robert Sansom MD.
