Lt. Col. Lehmann D. Hines, USAF, Ret.'s Obituary
Lehmann D. Hines, lovingly known as “Lee”, or “Papa Lee” to his grandchildren, went home to be with the Lord on January 15, 2015 after a brief illness at the age of 77. Lee was a strong man, but with a quiet and gentle spirit.
Lee is survived by his loving wife, Anne; daughter,Tracy Greathouse and husband David; two sons, Bruce Hines and Brian K. Hines; three grandchildren, Guy and Brooke Greathouse and Anoa Hines; two step-daughters, Darlene Kirk and husband Eddie, and Dee Anne McCrary and husband Kevin; four grandchildren, Lamar Kirk, David Kirk, John Kirk, and Kristen McCrary; siblings Joyce Chancellor and husband Jack, Naomi Duck and husband Dwayne, Dale Hines and wife Melva, David Hines and wife Anna, Galen Hines and wife Margaret, and Steve Hines and wife Sally; and many more loving family members and friends.
Lee was born in Farmington, NM on May 12, 1937 to Henry Penn Hines and Iris Viola Hines, church planters and pastors.
Lee attended Murray State Jr. College and Oklahoma State University, with a bachelor’s degree in Dairy Production. As an ROTC participant, he entered the U.S. Air Force upon graduation as a 2nd Lieutenant. Lee then completed a Master’s Degree in Education from USC.
A highly decorated Lt. Colonel in the U.S.A.F., Lee served 5½ years in Vietnam, receiving two Distinguished Flying Cross medals. Lee served in other positions, culminating in commanding the SHAPE Headquarters, Shevra Air Base, Belgium, where NATO generals flew in for conferences.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1983 with 24 years of service, Lee joined Oak Farms Dairy in San Antonio as a supervisor in various departments.
When Lee permanently retired in 1991, he and Anne became full time RV-ers, working with Christian Benevolence Ministries throughout the U.S. In 1997, they moved to Cleveland, TN and in 2006, moved to Longview, TX, continuing to serve in benevolence and intercessory prayer at Mobberly Baptist Church.
Lee was an accomplished bass singer, singing in quartets and choirs, as well as with Anne throughout the years as a duo.
Through the years, Lee and Anne mentored many “spiritual” sons and daughters, among them Assen Christov, a Bulgarian Roma Gypsy Pastor who attended Lee University School of Theology in TN while Lee was Director of Benevolence at North Cleveland Church of God. Assen and family returned to Bulgaria, where he is a church planter and pastor.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a fund for the Roma Gypsy Bulgarian Church, payable to “ASSEN CHRISTOV, SPECIAL ACCOUNT,” Texas Bank & Trust, 1801 Gilmer Road, Longview, TX, Attn: DAWN GOYNES.
Visitation will be at Rader Funeral Home, 1617 Judson Rd. on Monday, January 19th, from 6-8 p.m.
A Memorial Celebration of Lee’s homegoing will be at Mobberly Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 20th.
Interment with military honors will take place at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery.
