I just now discovered this site 6/23/13 and am touched by all the wonderful notes on it about Larry. He has been gone almost 3 years and I have still not been able to get over him. I thank you so very much for your kind words and appreciate your prayers.
As ill as Larry was, I was happy to see him step into eternity where he is now well and young. I miss him mightily and have come to the realization that I always will. Having moved to Brownwood, my birthsite, I am establishing an existance alone. Still, I find his spirit with me and I am comforted by it all the while stricken with such a sense of loss. I am solaced with the 42 years I had with him Thank you for your memories of Larry.

I attended Westlake when Larry was there and we ended up sharing a house with three other students in the Hollywood hills. I was four years younger than Larry and looked to him for musical as well as personal guidance being so far from home. I still recall very vividly our nightly jam sessions where he never failed to completely knock me out with his ability and enthusiasm for playing. I recall him sometimes getting into a groove so strong that he would end up just leaning back and laughing because it was so powerful. When i would have doubts about my playing or ability to "fit in" Larry was always very encouraging and helpful as he really cared about people. I still remember him telling me that he liked me as a person because I never "bugged" anyone. I remember when he told me he had played with Lester Flatt and Earl Scuggs and i thought he was putting me on because i could'nt believe those names were real. He patiently explained to me they were real people and masterful pickers and by doing so once again expanded my musical knowledge.
Rest in peace dear friend. I have never forgotten your kindness and unbelievable talent on the guitar.

Larry was a good friend in high school, and I had the opportunity to play with him and Jimmy once in their home, though I wasn't in the same league. But I have several happy memories of our time together at Mt. Pleasant High.##imported-begin##John Salmon##imported-end##

I had the privilege of attending two years of high school with Larry and we were in the choir together. We graduated in 1952. We all enjoyed the music of the Play Boys - Larry, Jimmy McGuire and Doyle Cartwright. We did not miss an opportunity to hear them play. The last time I saw Larry was several years ago when he and his band came to Mt. Pleasant and played at Skidmore's Big Barn.

Larry was an outstanding guitar player, and a great man to play music with. His ability with the guitar was unique - and very few people could play the style of music Larry was an expert at. In fact, Eldon Shamblin and Walter Lyons are the only two men I've ever met that could play the style that Larry could play. I have played with Larry on several occasions, and was happy to call him a friend. When it came to Western Swing / jazz-style playing, Larry was one of the best in the business. I will miss him, and my prayer is with his family today. When we're playing music in heaven someday, I look forward to playing with Larry once again. Kind, humble, generous, thoughtful, creative, talented. My uncle Larry was all these things & more. I looked forward to each Christmas, hoping he'd bring his guitar & play some tunes. We had the honor and privilege of knowing Larry for over 20 years or so..Never met a more kind, decent, dedicated man than he was. Larry absolutely loved making music..and did it better than any "top" guitar picker anywhere. He also loved his friends, and we are glad we got to be counted among them.
Not sure how the East Texas Music world will carry on without him, but as for us, we will try to honor him by continuing picking the best we possibly can..although never quite as well as Larry and his favorite Epiphone Guitar. We know he's got to be organizing a jam session up there already with PeeWee, Buzz, and all the other great pickers who got to pick with him in the past.##imported-begin##Don & Sue Lummus##imported-end##
