Kent Leon Phillips' Obituary
Kent Leon Phillips went to be with the Lord September 23, 2005. Kent was
born February 27, 1959 in Nacogdoches, Texas to Leon and Helen Phillips and
was 46 years old. Funeral services will be held at 4 PM Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at Mobberly Baptist Church, 625 East Loop 281. Burial will follow in Lakeview Cemetery under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday evening, September 26, 2005 in the funeral home chapel, 1617 Judson Road.
Kent graduated from Longview High School in 1977 and married his high school
sweetheart, Melony Hunter in 1980. They spent 25 years together enjoying
life and their family. Kent was a hard worker and liked working with his
hands. He worked at Brown & Root, Remtex, and then was hired by Texas
Eastman Voridian where he was a maintenance mechanic.
Kent was a life-long member of Mobberly Baptist church. He began in Cradle
Roll and members saw him grow from a mischievous little boy to serving as a
Sunday School teacher and deacon, as well as a Bible Study Fellowship
leader. He had a heart for telling others about his Savior and desired his
children to grow up knowing what was truly important in life.
Kent made many happy memories with his children. He loved spending time with
them working in the yard, and then playing just as hard. He was a fun,
loving dad not only to his children, but was also a foster parent for 16
years.
Kent faced his first battle with cancer when he was 29 years old. Then in
January of 2004, he was diagnosed with a second cancer resulting from the
radiation treatments he had received years ago. He had a wonderful outlook
on life and always said that God wouldn't take him one minute earlier than
when he was supposed to go. He decided to focus on living and making
memories with his family and was an inspiration to them every day. Despite
painful treatments and other physically agonizing procedures, he always had
a smile and a ready handshake.
Kent is survived by his mother, Helen Phillips, and his wife, Melony. He is
survived by his sons, Hunter, Zack, and Sam and two daughters, Molly and
Daisy; brother Phil Phillips and sister-in-law Debbie. Kent was very loved
by Melony's parents, Randle and Anita Hunter of Concord, Arkansas. As the
first son-in-law of the family, he was also dear to Melony's younger
sisters, Jill and her husband Robbie Tuma of Rockwall, Wendy and her husband
Richard Matthews of Heber Springs Arkansas, and Lori Hunter of Heber
Springs, Arkansas. Kent is also survived by Uncle Rex, and has nine nieces
and nephews, two cousins and their families, and special childhood friend, Tommy Harriss.
The Phillips family would like to express thanks to Dr. Sansom, Nurse Gail
Jester of Life Care Hospice, our Eastman Voridian friends and our church
family. Memorials may be made to the Mobberly Baptist Youth Building Fund, 625 East Loop 281, Longview, Texas 75605.
