Judge William Morgan Jennings' Obituary
William M. "Bill" Jennings, 53, Judge of the 124th District Court, passed away on October 17, 2009, as the result of a heart attack suffered while he was pursuing his passion of sailing in a regatta on Lake Tyler. Bill was born to Cecil and Virginia Jennings in Marshall, Texas on October 26, 1955. He attended Longview public schools and graduated from Longview High School in 1974. He attended Kilgore College and received his undergraduate degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. He graduated from Texas Tech School of Law in 1981. Bill began his legal career as an Assistant Criminal District Attorney in 1982. He left the District Attorney's office for the private practice of law in 1984. He worked in private practice until he was appointed by Governor George W. Bush to serve as Criminal District Attorney for Gregg County in 1996. He was elected by the citizens of Gregg County for three additional terms. He resigned in 2007 to run for District Judge, and was elected Judge of the 124th District Court of Gregg County in 2008. He served as District Judge from January, 2009, until his untimely death. Bill Jennings was an outstanding lawyer, prosecutor, and jurist.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Steve Jennings, and a nephew Jason Lee. He is survived by his sister Debbie Spruce and her husband Harold, a sister Barbra Halbrooks, nieces, nephews, and countless friends. He was a beloved son, brother, uncle and friend.
Bill loved his work, sailing, family and friends.
His energetic and productive life was an example of gracious service to others, generosity of spirit and positive attitude.
All of his time working in the public eye does not compare with the time he spent privately helping any and all who sought his guidance, assistance, and financial support that he gave willingly.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church in downtown Longview with Dr. Pat Sparks officiating under direction of Rader Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association or Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
