Dear Dawn & Family
I am truly sorry for the loss of your precious husband and father, Joe Lyons. He was a remarkable friend for and with whom I worked at Sherwin Williams on North High Street in the mid-1980's...so very long ago.
As a result of replying to a Help Wanted ad in the Longview News Journal, I met with Joe at the Sherwin-Williams store in order to apply for a New part-time job as District Secretary. It was a new position and after Joe described the duties and requirements of the position, I was eager to go to work for him. When it came time for him to show me our new office, Joe walked me to the Store next door. I have to laugh because he unlocked the glass door and the office was totally dark AND EMPTY! lol There was no electricity, no heat (and it was freezing outside), and No Furniture! lol I was shocked but NOT discouraged because Joe (the ultimate salesman) was extremely excited about his new future District Manager's office in Longview. His excitement and can-do Spirit rubbed off on me and I was ready and willing to take the job and literally "start from scratch"--putting together his first East Texas District Office. We didn't have telephones nor did I have a typewriter because we needed electricity but Joe knew exactly how to get it done! He also went next door to the Sherwin-Williams store and called the main office in Dallas and a few days later, our new-used office furniture (two desks two chairs, a typewriter and a file cabinet) arrived. Hallelujah! Joe and I were praising the Lord for making the Way for us to begin working (and I could begin tabulating the Managers' and Assistant Managers' hours) so we could finish the payroll for our store employees during our first month in business. I had formerly worked in an office where I had a word processor so going back to using only a typewriter was a challenge to me, but our positive attitudes and lots of prayers made it possible for us to begin operating as a successful District Office for Sherwin-Williams.
In a nutshell, it was Joe's positive Spirit that rubbed off on me and I am thankful that my personality was such that I didn't mind doing all the necessary tasks he assigned me in order for him to reach his goals. Joe made a lasting impression on me even though my work for him was part time. I drove from our office at Noon to the Spring Hill High School administration office to work another half day until I could find a full-time job which I did by the end of that Spring semester.
I am so thankful but also sad that I happened upon this wonderful obituary in order for me to thank God for this wonderful man and friend. To God be the Glory for allowing Joe Lyons to be such a positive influence on my Life.
