Jane Evelyn Swindell's Obituary
Jane Evelyn Carlisle Swindell
August 17, 1916 to February 10, 2016
Born in Reilly Springs, TX to Freeman Carlisle and Anna Belle Finley Carlisle. She was the second oldest of 6 children (2 boys and 4 girls) and the oldest daughter.
Married Truman Swindell on January 8, 1936
Preceded in death by her husband, Truman, she is survived by one daughter, Linda Page of Longview and one grandson, Jason Middlebrook of Longview, a sister, Diane Carlisle Dixon of Sulphur Springs and many nieces and nephews.
Janie was a homemaker and also worked at an Air Defense plant in Dallas as a riveter during World War II. Living in Longview for over 70 years, Janie was very active in the First Baptist Church where she worked in Cradle Roll, her Sunday School class, Meals on Wheels and her favorite, Busy Hands, where she and other ladies made over 4000 baby quilts and blankets that were distributed to orphan children all over the world. Janie said finally in her 80’s, she found her true calling which was making baby quilts and blankets. This was her passion and her joy.
Since her husband of 60 years, Truman, worked in many foreign countries, Janie travelled with him several times and lived several years in Venezuela, England, Holland and New Zealand and many individual States in the USA. She loved living in different cultures and stayed in touch with so many people she became friends with during their travels.
Many people in Longview will remember Janie for the wonderful homemade bread that she made and shared. She loved baking bread and sharing it with her friends while the bread was still warm from the oven. She always believed in sharing and doing for others.
Janie lived a long, wonderful life. She loved her family, her friends, her church and her Lord. Please rejoice in the life of the wonderful Christian woman. She will be missed greatly by her family and so many others.
A private family graveside will be held at Restlawn Memorial Park outside of Sulphur Springs, TX on February 13, 2016.
Memorials can be made to Busy Hands at First Baptist Church, 209 E. South St. Longview, TX 75601
