James Cureton's Obituary
The life of James LW Cureton will be celebrated, Saturday, August 27th, 2011 at 2:00 pm in the Chapel at Rader Funeral Home in Longview. Born February 8th, 1936 at Gregg Memorial Hospital in Longview. James left this earth on August 4th at the same site which is now Good Shephard Hospital of Longview.
James was the middle son of Esther Stevens and Wilbur Cureton of East Mountain, Texas. He attended East Mountain school and went to Kilgore College on a sports scholarship. After serving in the Army for 3 years followed by two years of service in the National Guard he was hired by Texas Eastman where he remained for 35 years in the Polyethylene Department.
James was a very talented masoner and loved to build things. He worked jobs on his days off from Eastman Kodak laying bricks, building chain link fences and building his own home on Lake Cherokee.
In his spare time James enjoyed hunting on the Draper Ranch in Mason, Texas for many years and trotline fishing on the Red River in Louisiana. Although Mr. Cureton had many talents, his greatest joy came from making people laugh. He was an excellent story and joke teller.
James is survived by his 2 children, Mark Cureton of New York and Laurie Elam of Coppell, Texas and grandson, Lee Shaw of Dallas and granddaughter, Lindsey Shaw of Coppell. Aunt Bernice Crockett, cousins Jane Ann McDaniel, Deborah Cox, Paul Cox, Don Edmondson, June Edmondson, Manning Cureton, Billy Cureton, Robert Crockett and several nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind outstanding neighbors Kay & Rick Armour and Russell & Teresa Reaves all of Tatum, TX. James was preceded in death by his parents and older brother Stanley Cureton and younger brother Jackie Cureton.
