I knew Hertha in high school since she married a Carlisle boy, Grant. I was also a Pine Burr with Hertha at SFA. We were friends, and I am so sorry about her passing. My condolences and prayers are with her family. Mavis McCaulely Simecek
Terry, your mother was a wonderful lady and good neighbor to our family. You and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Love from all the McNew family. Kathy McNew Crystal
My younger brother, H.L. Luman, was in Mrs. Whatley's 1st grade class in, I think, 1957.
During that school year, H.L. became ill and was bedridden for a period of time. After school most afternoons Mrs. Whatley came to our home and helped H.L. with lessons.
I remember her sitting cross-legged on the foot of his bed going over the classwork. I will always remember how much this meant to my family. How many teachers would take time to do this for a child?

Terry & Famlly, love & Prayers , remember your Mom very well, may your loving memories comfort you. Celeste Boyd
Mrs. Hertha taught children's choir at Calvary Baptist Church and my son Martin was a part of her choir. I will never forget the winter that it snowed and Martin was so concerned about whether Mrs. Hertha could make it home from Ore City in the ice. So, he called her to check on her. What an influence she was in so many children's lives. And I have had the privilege to be a close part of her family through her sister Patsy, who I dearly love. As I cared for my husband before he passed away, I was reminded of the perfect example Hertha was as a wife and caregiver for Grant. So many years she loved and took care of him. A true example of "in sickness and in health". I am blessed to have known Hertha.
Mrs. Whatley was my 1st grade teacher in 1963!! I can still remember sitting in her classroom when Mr. Grady Coates, the principal came over the loud speaker to announce that President John F. Kennedy had passed away. I can still here her voice as she would read aloud to us. She would definitely make us mind but, she was fun also.
I am grateful she was my !st grade teacher. Through the years as I have worked in the education field and I get to interact with 1st grade students....I think of Hertha Whatley and how she impacted my life!
May God Bless and comfort you in the days ahead.
Hertha sat by the fire at Albert Pike with me till midnight, just to be there with me the minute I turned 50. My family loved this woman the day we met her. She will always be in my heart. I miss her already. Terry and Shannon, We love both of you. Stay Stong
