Gussie Lee Perry Leatherman
Gussie Lee Perry Leatherman was born June 8, 1924, to Daphine and Fred Perry in Grimes County, Texas. She went peacefully to her Lord on January 20, 2010, in Longview, Texas after a long illness.
Gussie Lee graduated from Sam Houston State University with an Education Degree, followed by a Master's Degree in Social Studies. After teaching in Galveston and Bryan she married John Gibbs Leatherman.
The two of them were long time members of Terrace United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas where Gussie Lee was active in the United Methodist Women. She was the founding teacher of Big Little School where she taught for 15 years.
Gussie Lee and Gibbs were active volunteers in Boy and Girl Scouting. Both of them received the Silver Beaver Award of the Boy Scouts of America. She established and wrote the Hoofbeat newsletter for adult scouters in the Mustang District of Houston, Texas for many years.
She is survived by her 2 children, Dr. George Leatherman of Longview and Genie Kelly of Conroe. She was loving grandmother to 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Gussie Lee was preceded in death by her husband John Gibbs Leatherman, parents, and brother William F Perry. She touched many lives and was an inspiration to others in her years of devoted service to her Lord Jesus Christ, and to her church, family, students, and community. She will be sorely missed.
The family will receive friends at Woodlawn Funeral Home from 7-9 Sunday, January 24.
The service will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home at 1101 Antoine in Houston at 2 PM on Monday January 25 under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
