GL Palmer's Obituary
Services for GL Palmer, 80, of Longview will be held at Greggton First Baptist Church on Saturday, December 11, 2010 at 3:30 PM with Reverend Bobby E. Moore officiating, assisted by Reverend Greg Moulton. Interment will follow in Memory Park Cemetery in Longview. Services are under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
Mr. Palmer was born on May 26, 1930, in Sayer, Oklahoma to Audrey and Gus Palmer. He died in Longview, Texas on Thursday, December 9, 2010. His childhood was shared with an older sister, Genevieve, and a younger sister, AnnaBelle. After graduating from Westville High School in Oklahoma, he proudly served his country in Germany in the Army. Palmer attended Conners Junior College and earned his degree from East Central State University in Ada, Oklahoma. His graduate work was done at East Texas State University in Commerce, Texas. Mr. Palmer taught school in Meeker, Oklahoma; Siloam Springs, Arkansas; Longview and Wylie, Texas; and 25 years at Plainview School in Sheridan Lake , Colorado.
It was at Sheridan Lake where Palmer met his life-mate, Janet Franklin. They were married June 4, 1966, at Valley View Baptist Church in Longview. This past June they celebrated 44 years of marriage at a reception given by family and friends.
Known to all as Palmer or Pode, he touched many lives with his unique personality. His nephews and nieces spent many happy childhood hours fishing, hunting, or just hanging out with Uncle Pode. The countless number of students he taught were blessed with his caring ways. Palmer had the ability to make everyone he met feel as if they were his best friend. Palmer was an active member of Greggton First Baptist Church, Longview, where he often called his fellow members ?my church family?. He was well known for his hobby of collecting antiques and ?stuff?.
G.L. Palmer was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Genevieve Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Janet; his sister, AnnaBelle Jones; his nephews, John, Jerry, and Rick Jones, and Tom, Scott and Jack Martin; his nieces, Barbara Jones Finfrock, Pam Martin Quick, Linda Martin Beavers, and Lisa Martin Tennison. Palmer is also survived by his dog, Trooper; Janet?s ?Franklin? family; and long-time friends James and Christene Tramel.
The family request that memorials be made to Greggton First Baptist Church Building Fund, Towner Community Scholarship Fund, or to the charity of your choice.
The family would like to thank Encompass Home Health, DiVita Dialysis Center, Good Shepherd Hospital, and Highland Pines Nursing Home for the love and care given to Palmer. ?Palmer?s family and friends mourn his passing, rejoice in his release, and feel blessed to have been a part of his life.?
