Georgette B. Campbell's Obituary
Georgette Britt Campbell, 72, passed away on February 11, 2024 in Houston, TX. She was born April 24, 1951, in Idabel, OK, the daughter of Dorothy and Charles Britt. She married James B. “Jim” Campbell on July 2, 1978 in Longview. Together they had two children.
She graduated from Haworth High School in 1969 and was crowned Miss Haworth in 1969. She earned a degree in nursing from Paris Junior College and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from UT Tyler. Georgette moved to Longview in the mid 1970’s based on a coin flip. She worked as a full time nurse in the ER in Longview, then worked under her dear friend Dr. Mary Andrews, off and on over the years. She was active in the Junior League of Longview, and was a member of First Christian Church. She took time off from nursing to be a stay at home mom in the 80’s and 90’s, baking her famous cookies, shuttling kids to activities, and hearing all about the school days. In the mid 1990’s, she went to work at Box Office Travel and fell in love with the pre-internet travel industry. She started her own business, Home Office Travel, and planned fabulous custom itineraries for international destinations for about 25 years. Georgette was a global traveler visiting 56 countries (but over 50 trips to England alone) and left only two destinations unseen on her bucket list – Croatia and the Northern Lights. Her most recent trip was a cruise to Central America with family. She was a lifelong avid genealogist, and in more recent years, became active in the Colonial Dames and the Daughters of the American Revolution where she served as registrar of the Aaron Burleson Chapter.
She was just a few short months away from retirement from Texas Department of State Health Services where she worked as a public health nurse treating tuberculosis for nearly eight years. She was excited to travel more, finish her memoir, dote on her husband and kids, play more Mah Jong, and keep working with the Dames and the DAR.
Georgette was a decisive, opinionated, joyful, and energetic woman. Her memory was sharp and she had no shortage of funny, fascinating tales from the exciting life she led. She was fiercely patriotic and actively interested in local and federal politics. She adored coffee, Amazon, old movies, wine, desserts and 60s & 70’s music. She was artistic, handy, outgoing, musically inclined, a talented seamstress, supported the arts, and always tipped her servers 20% in cash. She started the family’s Maltese dog trend in 1993, and leaves behind a precious Maltese named JC. During the pandemic, she became obsessed with gardening and spent countless hours tending to her backyard oasis of flowers. She cherished her colleagues, friends, relatives and dogs with all her heart. She never wanted anyone to spend a major holiday alone, and we frequently shared our home with a cast of characters at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Georgie’s consistent advice was 1. life is short; enjoy it and book that trip! And 2. Find work, send money!
Georgette was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Britt, of Idabel, OK, many cousins and aunts, most notably aunt Ruby Harris of Idabel, OK, and her dear nephew Captain Jason Eric Farley of Claremore, OK.
She is survived by her devoted husband of 45 years Jim Campbell (and JC the Maltese) of Longview, daughter Connie Campbell Gadt (Paul Gadt) of Longview, granddaughter Carmen Gadt of Longview, daughter Katie Campbell of Houston, son John Campbell (Brooke Campbell) of Houston, sister Martha Farley (Jim Farley) of Longview, nephew John Michael Farley of Little Rock, sister Nancy Williams (Bob Williams) of Idabel, nephew Heath Williams (Diana Williams) of Houston, and sister-in-law Linda McGuire (David McGuire) of Brandon, MS.
