Precious “Miss Evelyn”! This was what the teenagers at Unity Baptist Church in LaGrange, GA fondly called her. She was the pianist at Unity when my mother was elected as music director. I remember when my mother decided the choir would sing Peter J. Wilhousky’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic. Miss Evelyn was in shock and told my mother she could never learn to play that arrangement. My mother said, “Evelyn, yes you can”. She put hours of practice into that arrangement. I was privileged to listen to her practice and hug her saying, “Miss Evelyn” I’m so proud of you”! And I was!! The performance Sunday she played beautifully! Years later, during a visit to LaGrange, she took the time to come see me at my work place. What an honor and privilege that was for me! “Miss Evelyn” took the time to come see ME! WOW! There seemed to be a special bond between her and me and I treasured that bond of love.
She was a strong spiritual influence on me during my teenage years and I will always be grateful for that. Then came the day when Melody married my cousin, Joe. That meant we were family!!
What an honor and blessing to have had the privilege of knowing such a wonderful, loving Christian woman of honor. We will all see her again in our eternal Home. My prayers are with you Melody, Pam, David and your families. God give you comfort!
Much love,
Deda
