Something reminded me of my favorite teacher, Mrs. Tompkins and I decided to look her up, only to find that she had passed. My deepest sympathies go to her loved ones. She was truly one of the best human beings I've ever known. I'll never forget her mustard and cheese sandwiches, gerbils, that the word "sequoia" has all 5 vowels in it, or that first grade was the best school year of my life. I just learned of my good friend, Ellen Tompkins, death. I am so sorry to have missed the service for Ellen. She was such a beautiful person, inside and outside. Ellen was a wonderful teacher who loved teaching and she loved each of her children completely. She remained a good friend to me throughout her lifetime. I was saddened to learn of Ellen's passing this week. Had we known sooner we'd certainly have attended her services today. We spent many enjoyable hours with Ellen and Bob in the late 90s and early 2000s. I was a classmate of Milton and Morris, and spoke at Milton's services in 1999. My thoughts and prayers are with Ellen's family. She was the first grade teacher for both of my children nearly 50 years ago. And she shared with them, as she did with hundreds of others, her genuine caring and exceptional talents as a friend and teacher. To this day I wonder at how I was so lucky as to be put in her class when my family moved from Tulsa to Longview. I feel as though the most important things I have ever learned in my life I learned in the first grade from Mrs. Tompkins.
She always had so much faith in me and encouraged me through high school and beyond. I will forever remember standing on the stage at the Little Theater with her after my last drill team spring show and her saying, "I was at your first performance at Pine Tree, I wouldn't have missed your last."

We are soo sorry to hear of the passing of Mrs. Tompkins. She was one of my husband's first computer customers when he started his business and filmed his commercial at her house. She also had our boys come over a few times so she could spend some time with them. She loved kids so very much. As a child I would look at her in wonder. She was always confident and so organized. I remember summer with ice cream, watermelon with singing and wonderful laughter.
