Donnie was ill for many years prior to his death, but he bore his illnesses cheerfully and was grateful for every act of kindness from his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling, visiting, and entertaining friends and family as well as following local, state, and national politics.
A graduate of Smiley High School and the University of Texas at Tyler, Donnie was a former captain of the Gregg County Sheriff’s Department, during which time he helped write and implement the initial jail standards for the state of Texas. He also served as a state parole officer and retired as a CSCD adult probation officer. In that position he implemented the Gregg County Community Service Program.
Donnie was a proud member of Gladewater Masonic Lodge #852, the Waco Scottish Rite, and Sharon Temple Shrine. For many years he rode with the Sharon Temple Mounted Patrol. He had served as president of the Gladewater Jaycees and had been a member of the Gladewater Roundup Rodeo Association Board of Directors, the White Oak Lions Club, and Optimist Club of Longview. He also served as a councilman for the city of White Oak and was a member of First Baptist Church of Longview.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Shrine Hospital for Children, 815 Market Street, Galveston, TX 77550.
