Dr. David A. Massey, Sr.
Dr. David A. Massey, Sr., was born January 11, 1956 to John T. and Marie Massey. Bro. David, age 57, was the son of a Southern Baptist minister. He was saved at the age of eight and surrendered to the ministry while a junior in high school. He was born in Waco, Texas, attended public schools in Houston, and then his family lived in Hearne, Texas and was a 1974 Graduate of Hearne High School.
In 1990, Bro. David received his Doctor of Ministry Degree from Southern Baptist Center for Biblical Studies. He received his Master of Divinity Degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in 1983 and in 1978 received his Bachelor of Arts from Baylor University majoring in Greek and Religion.
His pastoral experience led him several different places. 1998 to Present he was Pastor of First Baptist Church of Hallsville, 1988-1998 Pastor of First Baptist Church of Diana, Texas, 1985-1988, Pastor of Hebron Baptist Church of Yoakum, Texas, 1982-1985, Associate Pastor of Bosque Valley Baptist Church, Clinton, Texas, 1981-1982, Minister of Education/Youth at First Baptist Church, Clifton, Texas, 1978-1981, Pastor of Edgefield Baptist Church, of Waco, Texas and from 1976-1978, Pastor of Ephesus Baptist Church, Marquez, Texas.
Bro. David was qualified in Taylor Johnson Analysis for family counseling. He has served as moderator or vice-moderator in three denominational association and chairman of various committees in two other associations for several years from 1977. He was on the Board of Trustees at ETBU from 2002-2011 and was on the Executive Board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas from 2002 to 2008.
Because of his interest in missions, he has shared in evangelistic efforts in Morellos and Zaragoza, Mexico. In 1995, he participated in Partnership Mission to Spain and returned again in 1997 to preach revivals in Bilbao, Bermeo, and Basauri, Spain. In 1996, Bro. David was recognized as the “Best Pastor in East Texas” in the Longview News Journal’s Best in East Texas
Bro. David was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, who enjoyed spending time with his family. He also enjoyed bicycling, fishing, hunting, golf, and especially baseball.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Becky Massey and his father, John Tillman Massey.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Mari Lynn Hensley and husband Jeremy, Michelle Massey, Martha Massey and David Massey, Jr.; grandson, Blain Hensley; mother, Marie Massey; and sisters, Becky Ellison and husband Michael and their daughter, Chelsie, and sister Karen Gonzalez.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 21, 2013 at the First Baptist Church, Hallsville, with Dr. Monty Pierce, Randy Babin, Director of Missions and Rev. Jeff Little officiating. Private burial will be in Hallsville Cemetery. Services are under direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
