Daniel L. Hill's Obituary
Graveside services for Daniel Lavator Hill, 76, of Longview will be held at Lakeview Memorial Cemetery at 10:00 AM Monday November 12, 2007, and will be followed by a memorial service at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, 120 Hampton Court, Longview,
at 11:00 AM. Visitation will be at Rader Funeral Home from 2:00 ? 4:00 P.M., Sunday, November 11.
Dan Hill was born Feb. 22, 1931 in Knoxville, TN. to Meldon N. and Agnes Cate Hill, who preceded him in death. He graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1954, having earned a B. S. degree in Electrical Engineering, and was employed by the Tennessee Valley Authority until he began active duty in the United States Air Force in January 1955. Following basic training he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command,
where he served until his release from active duty in May, 1960. He began a 34 year employment career with Southwestern Electric Power Co. on June 1, 1960, and retired on June 1, 1994.
Dan was a charter member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon, ruling elder, Sunday School teacher and youth sponsor. He served as
Scoutmaster of Boy Scouts of America Troop 225, sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church of Longview, for 27 years. After retiring as Scoutmaster, he continued his work with the Boy Scouts as a committee member and advisor for the Cherokee Trace Chapter of the Order of the Arrow. Dan earned his Wood Badge Beads and received the
Scoutmaster of the Year Award, the District Award of Merit and the Silver Beaver Award from the East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. He served as the Disaster Relief Chairman of the Piney Woods Chapter of the American Red Cross for several years. He was a Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers IEEE, a Life Member of the Texas PTA, served as Area Governor for Toastmasters International, and taught for several years at the Kilgore College School for Continuing Education. He was a Paid Up For Life member of The American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and served as District 3 Commander of the American Legion, Department of Texas from 1989-1991. He then served on the Americanism Commission for the Department of Texas for four years as the liaison to the Boy Scouts
of America.
Dan is survived by his wife Shirley W. Hill, his daughter Laura Jo Hill, his son and daughter-in-law Tim and Laura Kay Hill and his grandsons Jacob Logan and Jared Lawson Hill, all of Longview; two brothers, James R. Hill and Charles P. Hill and his wife, Clara, and two nephews, Joseph R. and Perry Hill and his wife, Ashley, all of Knoxville, TN. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, Thomas A. Whitehead and his wife, Bobbie, and Robert J. Jack Whitehead and his wife, Melba, and their families; several cousins, and a host of very dear and caring friends.
The family wishes to express their gratitude and appreciation for the loving care given to Dan by the administration and staff at Highland Pines Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past 5 years. Special thanks go to his nurses Wanda Davis, Loretta Faggans, Donna Quintel, Rita Bethea, and all the CNA?s who cared for him at Highland Pines.
