Funeral Services for D.J. Burks, 89, of Henderson, will be held at 10:00am Thursday, May 9, at Calvary Baptist Church with Bro. Bill Kuykendall officiating. A private family interment will follow at Zion Hill Cemetery led by Bro. Frank Lane under the direction of Rader Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 5-7pm at Calvary Baptist Church.
David Joshua Burks died Monday, May 6, 2013 surrounded by family. He was born in Brachfield on September 14, 1923 to Martin and Lillie Burks. He graduated from Henderson High School and McNee Business School. He attended the University of Wisconsin while in the Navy during WW II.
He married Reta Faye Jones on September 28, 1946. He was employed by Henderson Clay Products for 25 years as Credit and Traffic Control Manager. He was owner of Burks Tires, Inc. for 29 years.
Church was a big part of his life. At Zion Hill Baptist Church, he served as a deacon, Sunday School teacher, church treasurer and song leader. After he joined Calvary Baptist Church, he held the positions of Chairman of the Deacons and Deacon Emeritus. He taught Sunday School for over 40 years. He served on the Building Committee, Finance Committee, Pastor Search Committee and Steering Committee. He was Trustee Emeritus of Texas Baptist Institute.
He was president of the Henderson Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Alpha/Omega Kiwanis, Henderson School Board, Texoma Tire Buyers Association, and the National Tire Dealers Association. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Citizens National Bank for 32 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Grady, Clyde, Cecil, Leon and Edward Burks, and sister Christine Burks, and son-in-law, Bruce Williams.
Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Reta Faye Burks; son, David Burks and wife, Dina; daughters; Lana Gay Dobbins and husband Jim, and Terri Williams, all of Henderson; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Davy Burks, Tim Steinbach, Dalin Burks, Greg Steinbach, Jonathan Burks, Matthew Williams and Samuel Dobbins.
