Cynthia died on Sunday, May 26, 2019 at home surrounded by loved ones. From her birth in Lindale, TX on September 27, 1927 to her death on Sunday she was a strong, loving, caring soul and a survivor. Cynthia was born at home to Nathan and Cynthia Crawley Johnson Cooper.
Her early years were spent mostly in Bullard, TX where she lived with older sisters, Eupha (Edgar) Clements and Cora (Claud) Stripling and also lived several years with extended family, Lella and Fred Stripling. On September 11, 1947 James B. Steele and Cynthia E. Cooper were married. Cynthia and James truly loved each other and made a great team – he farmed and she managed the business end of selling and delivering produce. Tragically, James was killed in a car wreck in 1977 after 29 years and 9 months of marriage. Cynthia is survived by their four children; Jimmie Don Steele (Terry), Ava Porter (Alan), Cynthia Ann Gragg ( Jim) and Martha Sue Smith ( Randy), grandchildren; Jennifer Smith, Kelly Smith Crabtree, Karen Porter, Mark Porter, Aaron Steele, Amber Gragg Guynes, Alisha Gragg Rusher, Christy Gragg Wyatt and her beloved friend and sister-in-law Gail Steele Edwards Hinman.
Cynthia remained single for the next fourteen years, often working for City Plumbing and helping friends, neighbors, children and grandkids. Cynthia’s passion was always helping others. During this time, as well as before James’s death, she served as the nursery attendant at Alpine Church of Christ. On May 4, 1991 she married the second love of her life, David Lee Wellborn. She had known David all of her adult life since he was the husband of her childhood friend, Sue Horton Wellborn. After both of their spouses died, David and Cynthia married and were inseparable until his death in 2014. From that marriage she gained 3 more children and is survived by – Judy Acker (Dale), Linda Mount (Jimmy) and Gary Wellborn (Karman) and grandchildren Scott Gilleland, David Gilleland, Daphanie Acker, Denise Acker Schmidt, DeAnn Acker Carter, Michael Mount, Paul Mount, Bryan Mount, Emily Mount DeHart, Kari Wellborn Penwell, Meagan Wellborn and Mandy Wellborn Lynch. She is also survived by 45 great-grandchildren.

The Wellborn / Steele family would like to extend our gratitude to Kimberly White a former loving caregiver and friend, all the staff at the Trinity Timbers Assisted Living Home, and Life Care Health Services. Special thanks goes to Linda Roberson, who seems more like her daughter than caregiver and friend, for her attentiveness and loving care during her last few years. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Alpine Church of Christ nursery.
