Charles Duvall's Obituary
Charles Delbert Duvall was born in his grandfather’s farmhouse outside of Allegre, KY on May 22, 1939. Raised in Detroit, he graduated from Denby High School in 1957. He graduated from Murray State University in 1963 with an accounting degree, working at General Motors during breaks to finance his education. His career in accounting, finance and management took him to nine states and one foreign country, leaving him and his family blessed with friends across the continent. Along the way he worked for Ernst & Whinney, Uniroyal, Eaton, Fisher Controls and the Polymer Corporation. He finished his career at General Motors where after his start in college he finally earned his five-year pin – 40 years after his first-hire date. He and his wife retired to Longview in 2004. He passed away after a brief illness on September 30, 2017.
Chuck married his sweetheart and biggest fan, Linda Joyce Kannon, in 1966 and they enjoyed 51 years together. They have three children, Dr. Charles Darren Duvall and his wife Marci Wise Duvall of Longview, Daniel Scott Duvall of Merritt Island, FL and Linda Kay Connelly and her husband Kenneth Dale Connelly of Kalispell, MT. Their grandchildren are Charles Ross Duvall, Madeline Claire Duvall and Mary Ellen Duvall of Longview, Abelywn Lea Connelly, USN of San Diego, CA and Samuel Alan Lawson Connelly of Kalispell, MT. He is survived by his brother Ron Duvall of Spring Hill, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edna and Cecil Duvall of Hopkinsville, KY.
Chuck enjoyed and was surprisingly proficient at any sport that involved hitting a ball, from pool to tennis to baseball to softball to ping-pong. He hit his last home run in slow-pitch softball at age 60, hanging up his glove to give others a chance to play. He discovered the other love of his life, golf, in his mid-20s and was an avid golfer all his life. He enjoyed the fellowship of the regular players at Pinecrest Country Club. He enjoyed lifting weights, reading, Sudoku, crosswords and especially the company of his children and grandchildren.
His true passion was sharing the love of Jesus with the world, using words when necessary. He had a heart for missions and benevolence, and used his organizational skills to help found or serve several benevolent organizations including Christian Family Services in St. Louis, MO, and Pathstones, a Christian counselling service in Longview. Chuck served as a deacon or elder at many churches of Christ and always kept a sermon and Bible class lesson tucked in his Bible – just in case. He loved people, mentored many, and was always ready with a word of encouragement, some hard-won wisdom or a large and friendly shoulder for comfort. He was a world-class hugger.
Chuck will be missed for his warmth, insight, humility, easy smile and his twinkling eyes. There will be a visitation from 7-9pm at Rader Funeral Home in Longview on Sunday, October 8. A memorial service will be held at Pine Tree Church of Christ at 10am on Monday, October 9. In lieu of flowers, donations to any of the organizations that he loved and served will be welcome: Pathstones and Caring & Sharing in Longview, and Camp Deer Run in Winnsboro, TX.
