Billy Joe Ferguson's Obituary
On Saturday, April 20, 2024, Billy Joe Ferguson, loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend to all, passed from this life surrounded by family and friends. He resided in Diana, TX at the time of his passing. Billy Joe was born May 12, 1931 in Gilmer, TX to Elmer and Anna Lou Ferguson. He is preceded in death by his adoring wife, Hilma Ferguson, parents, and brother Charles Ferguson.
Billy Joe attended and graduated from East Mountain Schools where he played in the band and was on the football team. Upon graduating, he served in the United States Navy from 1949 - 1955. He served our country in the Korean War aboard aircraft carriers USS Antietam and the USS Sitkoh Bay. He married his lifelong best friend and sweetheart on May 9, 1952. Together they had two daughters Debbie Hill and Cherron Jones, with whom they traveled the country and shared many wonderful memories. Upon leaving the US Navy, Billy Joe worked for Lowell Holloway Furniture, Carl Ferrell Humble, Lone Star Steel, and most notably the Longview Police Department. Sergeant "Fergy," as he was known, became a staple in the Longview community serving on the force as one of the first motorcycle policemen in Longview. He could be seen around town in uniform at the popular gathering sites of the Golden Point, Dairy Creme, or working games at Longview High School. He made a positive impact to so many in this role. The Ferguson family were active members of Mobberly Church of Christ and later Longview Church of Christ. After retiring from the police department, Billy Joe and his wife Hilma managed the Cherokee Club on Lake Cherokee in the 1980s for a short time. They enjoyed traveling the globe with family and friends as well as camping at many area lakes. Until the time of his death, Billy Joe could be found in his yard tending to flowers, mowing, or gardening. He never met a stranger and brought smiles to all he encountered.
He is survived by his brother Ross Ferguson, Daughters Debbie (Ronnie) Hill, Cherron (Stuart) Jones. Grandson Kerry (Kristin) Hill, Granddaughter Karen Hill. Great grandchildren BreAnna (Juan) Grimaldo, Kaitlyn Hill, Eric Hill, Sabrina Pennello, and Kenadie, Camille and Dylan Tate. Great great grandson Kayson Hill. He is also survived by many adoring nieces, nephews, and cousins.
