I remember cousins Betty Jo and Irene as BEAUTIFUL, in every way, and, when I
was a child, they made sure to make me feel special and asked questions about
what was important to me. Here's how we were cousins: My mother, Inez Watson
Yancey, was half-sister to Betty Jo and Irene's grandmother, my Aunt Nina Watson
Vinson. The Watson family NEVER paid attention to halfs-and-wholes. They just
loved each other. Grandpa Watson had four children by his Peterson wife, including
Aunt Nina. Then, after his wife's death, he married America Catharine Armstrong,
who was my mom's mother--and there were nine others.
Don't try to figure out genealogy; they were family. One of the best sounds in the
world was driving up to Clara and Little Mac's big house, and hearing their laughter
ring, as they sincerely greeted us. Uncle Grady and Aunt Essie Watson lived right
down the road from them, and I'm still in touch with their daughter, Mildred, who
is 98 years old.
We are scattered. We are in touch, because love never dies. These were also
the "huggingest" people I've ever known. When we were hugged by Aunt Nina,
it was a total surround of joy and greeting. Betty Jo, carry that joy with you.
