Barbara Anne Shirey's Obituary
Barbara Anne Gibson-Shirey went to her heavenly home on October 16, 2024, in Kilgore, TX at the age of 82. Barbara was born in Tyler, TX on September 11, 1942, and was raised in Bullard, TX. She was raised in this idyllic town with many friends and family members present. She adored her loving parents, Evelyn Faye (Davenport) and Thomas Ervie Gibson.
Barbara was a basketball player and cheerleader in grade school. She graduated from Bullard High School in 1960 where she excelled in ladies basketball and served as senior class president. She was voted twice by her classmates as “Most Happy”. Barbara was a member of First Baptist Church in Bullard. She attended Tyler Junior College and graduated with a Business Certificate. Barbara was married to the late Roy Carl Shirey on May 4, 1963. She then raised three children, Steven of Kilgore, Karen Oney of Denton and Thomas of Springhill.
Becoming a member of Trinity Baptist Church in 1973 after moving to Lakeport, TX, she was a very active participant-Celebration Choir for 30 years, church clerk over 25 years, and serviced in many womens auxiliaries. Barbara served as a Sunday school teacher for various age groups during her decades at the church.
Barbara and Roy owned Lakeport Grocery which was managed by her parents. They wanted their children raised on the same property as her parents, which were wonderful years for them all. Barbara’s favorite past-time was being with her grandchildren, Traven of Denton, Grayson (Tyler) Steen of Denton, and Layton of Longview.
As an avid fan of sports, Barbara was a Dallas Cowboys fan and enjoyed Figure Skating, Tennis and NASCAR Racing. She, and her best friend Joyce, also loved spending time together and their friendship endured through her final moments on earth, for which the family is most grateful.
The family would like to express deep gratitude for her care during her journey. Beverly, Rebecca, Kay, Johnna, Brianna, Roshanda, Virginia, Debra, Amber, Connie, Linda were part of the team of compassionate caregivers and support of family during her journey. The family wants to express deep gratitude for Barbara’s hospice care with Marshall Hospice of East Texas. It took a team of people to provide this compassionate and loving care, and the family will be forever grateful.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 19, 2024, from 9-10 AM in the Rosewood Park Mausoleum Chapel. Graveside services will be held at 10 AM with Br. Ross Law Officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations to be made to the American Alzheimer’s Association and/or Marshall Hospice of East Texas.
