B. Donald Manning's Obituary
B. Donald Manning, known as Don or Coach Manning, beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, passed away on January 10th, 2018 at Summer Meadows Nursing Home in Longview, Texas. Before coming to Texas to be close to family he lived in Ocala, Florida with his wife Rusty, formerly Russel L. Ridner. He was born on July 7, 1924 in Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. His American parents Sarah and David Michael Manning raised their family in Bayside, New York but also lived in Australia. He attended high school at La Salle Academy in New York City and Roxbury High School in Succasunna, New Jersey graduating in 1943. He served honorably in the Navy during World War II from 1943-1946, then attended college at East Stroudsburg State University from 1946 to 1949 with a Bachelor of Science in Health and Physical Education. He received his Master's Degree at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. He taught and coached in Montrose, Pennsylvania before coming to Roxbury High School in 1954 and retiring in 1984. He coached several sports but basketball was his passion. He was a devoted family man and was loved and respected by many.
He is predeceased by his wife, Betty, formerly Elizabeth Loretta Cowie. They raised their 9 children in Ironia and then Succasunna, New Jersey. He is also predeceased by his parents and his siblings, David, Rosemary, Helen and Virginia as well as his son Daniel.
Don is survived by his wife of 25 years, Rusty, his children and their spouses, Cindy Manning, Marcia and Bob Dayton, Joe Manning, Bill Manning, Jim and Jill Manning, Donna and Hugh Carr, Susan Clapper, Mike Manning and Matt Manning and 18 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren also survive him.
A mass will be said in his honor at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Marshall, Texas on Saturday, February 3rd at 5:00 PM.
