Arlene Young Roberts' Obituary
Arlene Mabel Young Roberts from Longview passed away on Monday, December 21, 2015. Arlene leaves behind her husband of 61 years – Edward Roberts; big sister Grace Harris of Lamoine, ME: daughter Cheryl Roberts Oswalt and husband Mike Oswalt of Houston; son John Edward Roberts and wife Jean Roberts of Hallsville; and 3 grandsons, Christopher and Joshua Roberts and James Oswalt. And 3 cats that adopted her.
She and three sisters were born in Connecticut and grew up in a place very dear to her heart in the shadow of Bar Harbor’s mountains, Lamoine, ME. She placed her faith in God at a young age and after high school moved to Chicago to attend Moody Bible Institute to purse a degree in Christian Childhood Education. While attending Moody she met the love of her life, Edward Roberts of Noblesville, Indiana. They were married and moved to New York to help her husband finish his ministry degree. In 1959 they moved to Longview to teach at Letourneau Tech with RG Letourneau. Arlene was involved in Letourneau faculty wives club and was soon the mother of two. She raised her children in Mobberly Baptist Church to love and trust in God. She worked for the Longview school district for 23 years as a teacher’s assistant and secretary. She adored working with her school kids at Valley View and Foster Junior High. As a mom she organized and led Boy Scouts and Campfire Girls, as well as chaperoning the youth choir on their adventures to Washington DC and Hawaii.
Her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ can be seen through her devotion in teaching Sunday school classes for over 50 years at Mobberly Baptist Church. Arlene was always grateful for her church family and friends and she cherished them. She enjoyed participating in senior adult choir and senior adult trips. Two of her favorites were the trip to Alaska and the Pennsylvanian Amish country.
After retiring from the school district she continued her community involvement by volunteering at the Greg County Historical Museum for over 10 years.
She loved her Lord, family, traveling, reading, giving and teaching.
Arlene touched so many lives during her lifetime. She showed her love of Jesus through her generous and caring heart. She was a doer not a praise seeker. She will be missed.
A memorial service for Arlene will be held in the Chapel of Rader Funeral Home on December 24, 2015 beginning at 12pm with Rev. Scott Schulik officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Mobberly Baptist Church Mission Fund in Arlene's name.
