Alexander C. Stevens, M.D.'s Obituary
Alexander Calvitt Stevens, M.D., beloved father, died peacefully on Thursday, December 29, 2011, in Longview, Texas. He was born in Mobile, Alabama on February 22, 1928.
Dr. Stevens attended high school at Gulf Coast Military Academy in Biloxi, Mississippi, and graduated in 1944. He went on to Texas A & M University, where he served in the Corps of Cadets, and graduated in 1948. After graduating from college, he attended the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, where he graduated in 1952. Following medical school, he attended The University of Alabama at Birmingham for his internship and residency, where he served as Chief Resident of Surgery from 1958-1959.
Dr. Stevens served in the United States Air Force between 1953 and 1955, achieving the rank of Captain.
In 1959, Dr. Stevens began his 30-year practice in surgery at Good Shepherd Hospital in Longview, where he served as Chief of Staff in 1963 and was Chief of Surgery for many years. He was a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Diplomate of the American Board of Surgery, and member of the Texas Surgical Society. He was also a member of the Texas Medical Association and the Gregg County Medical Society.
Dr. Stevens was an avid reader. In addition, he loved hunting and was a member of the Rocks Creek Hunting Club for over 40 years.
Dr. Stevens was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Floreid Francis Stevens. He is survived by son, Alexander C. Stevens, Jr. and his partner, David Stitt of Boston, Mass.; son, Thomas Huxford Stevens of Longview; and son, Scott English Stevens and wife Lainey and grandchildren Camp and Ella of Longview.

Services will be 12:00 o'clock noon Monday, January 2, 2012, at Trinity Episcopal Church with The Reverend Shanna Neff officiating with burial following at Rosewood Park.
