Worth National Cemetery in Dallas with Chaplain Vince Bathea officiating. Mr. Griffin, a Longview resident since 1965, moving from Marshall, Texas passed away in Longview on May 11, 2003 under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
He was born May 16, 1922 in Longview to Henry Clay Griffin, Sr. and Mary Martinez Griffin, that family being early East Texas Settlers, Griffin ancestors having arrived in Longview in the early 1870?s. Having been born in Longview, Mr. Griffin was raised in Marshall, Texas graduating from Marshall Schools and attending East Texas Baptist College. He enlisted in the Army during World War 11, after basic training, he saw service in Europe, North Africa and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign. His unit, of which he was a Sergeant, had been scheduled to participate in the Normandy Invasion, but they were never called. He could tell tales of the action he saw and the commands that he carried out that forever left their mark on his soul, having made him a better person for them. He especially cherished the many medals he won, but that he received only five years ago in Marshall.
He worked for many years at the old Marshall T&P Railroad shop, later turning to running the old Marshall Maid Bakery. He went to work for R. G. Letourneau in the early 60?s retiring from there in May 1981. He spent his retirement in doing for his family and friends. He was a traditional Catholic.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Mary Griffin of Marshall and by all of his brothers and sisters, Henry Clay, Jr. John Ross, and Daniel Boone, Goldie Griffin, Susan Morris and Mary Catherine Griffin all of Marshall.
He is survived by his wife Connie Griffin of Longview; three sons and spouses, Joe and Regina Griffin of Mansfield, TX. Tony and Vivian Griffin of Grand Prairie, Tx., Michael and Tammy Griffin of Kilgore, TX.; nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
