I'm thinking of you all from far away; I'm so happy my brother Frankie was able to see Uncle Shaw right before he passed away. Last night I was telling my husband about Shaw and how he was always just "there". He was an institution. And I remember one story in particular that always makes me laugh and cry too.. As a little girl, we made numerous trips in the car from Houston to Kilgore to see our grandparents. I would frequently ask my Dad, "Where are we going?", to which he would often answer, "Constantinople." So for years I thought Constantinople was just north of Nacogdoches. When I got a little older, I started to wise up, and I remember telling Uncle Shaw about this geography issue, and I asked whether my Dad was actually telling me the truth about Constantinople being off Highway 59. He said, "Gretchen, honey, I'm sorry to tell you that your Daddy has not been telling you the truth. It's really much closer to Gladewater."
There was no one like him. Love, gretchen
