Wilma Dean Sanders' Obituary
Wilma Dean Sanders (Hesser), 83 of Longview, Texas, was welcomed into the loving arms of Jesus on May 5, 2026. A lifelong resident of the area, Wilma grew up in the Gum Springs Community and attended Hallsville schools, graduating with the Class of 1961.
Wilma dedicated her life to the care and nurturing of children. She worked for several Mother's Day Out programs in Longview and retired from Angel’s Academy at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church after more than 20 years of service. Known affectionately to many as "Ms. Wilma," her impact was immeasurable; it was a common occurrence for her family to be out to dinner only to be approached by one of her former students, even years after they had left her classroom. Wilma loved music, singing as a young girl with her sisters. Watching all the different birds that visited her yard and growing plants, especially iris.
A woman of deep faith and generosity, Wilma was a devoted member of Longview Missionary Baptist Church for over 60 years. She served her church faithfully until her health no longer allowed her to. She was also known for her spirit of encouragement, frequently sending cards and gifting her signature covered coat hangers. Her "sock it to me cake" and pear preserves were legendary among family and friends.
Wilma was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Gaylon; their infant son, Robert Wade Sanders; her granddaughter, Elissa Rene Branch; her parents, William and Lowrene Hesser; and her sisters, Ola Reed and Mae Belle Bowlen.
She is survived by her two daughters, Jalena Branch and her husband Greg, Sherry Ellsworth and her husband Andy. She was "Mammy" to Cason Ellsworth (Ashley), Austin Ellsworth (Macy), Madison Branch, and Dylan Branch. Her legacy continues through her three great-grandchildren, Reece, Oliver, and Millie Ellsworth. She is also survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Kubena and Linda Sides (Steve); her brothers, Bill Hesser (Sandy) and Daniel Hesser; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 16, at 11:00 am at Gum Springs Cemetery on Gum Springs Road. All are welcome to attend as we gather to remember and celebrate a life well-lived. For those who wish to spend a few moments with the family before the ceremony, please feel free to arrive a little early.
In a beautiful tribute to their lifelong bond, this service will also include laying to rest her husband, Gaylon. Together, we will fulfill their shared wish that their ashes be joined and buried as one, symbolizing a love that remains inseparable.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Highland Pines staff and Heart To Heart Hospice (Kara & Erin) for the compassionate care provided to our mom.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Longview Missionary Baptist Church’s 806 building fund, located at 800 E. Loop 281, Longview, TX 75605.
Wilma will be deeply missed and will remain forever in our hearts.
