WILLIAM OTHO ?JACK? MORRIS
William Otho ?Jack? Morris was born in Huntsville, Texas on January 2, 1911 and died Monday, September 26, 2005 at a Longview nursing center. He graduated from Huntsville High School and Sam Houston State University and received a Master?s Degree from The University of Texas in Austin. He was a teacher, principal, and superintendent of Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas and later worked for The Texas Rehabilitation Commission. Mr. Morris went into the U.S. Army Air Corps in 1943 where his most significant assignment was as counselor to the severely handicapped at Percy Jones General Hospital in Battle Creek, Michigan. Following military service, he returned to The Texas Rehabilitation Commission until his retirement in 1974 and later operated cattle ranches in Harrison and Rusk Counties.
Mr. Morris was a member and a deacon of the First Baptist Church of Longview and taught the Young Men and Adult?s Classes for many years. His church was a very important part of his life.
On June 15, 1937, he married Miss Imogene Irwin of Laneville in a very small ceremony in Austin where they were both students at the University of Texas. They had 67 wonderful years together. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a brother, James Walter Morris, Jr. of Austin and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father James Walter Morris, Sr., his mother Ethel Allene Thompson Morris; a sister, Margaret Morris Craig and a brother, Robert Edward Morris.
Graveside services will be held at 9 AM Wednesday at Memory Park Cemetery with Rev. Dewayne Beaty officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Rader Funeral Home of Longview.
