William "Herb" Whatley, Jr.'s Obituary
Graveside services for William "Herb" Whatley, 87, of Longview will be 11 AM, Wednesday, September 19, 2012 at Rosewood Park.
Mr. Whatley was born on July 8, 1925 in Greenville, TX to Zephyr Hyde & William Herbert Whatley, Sr.
Herb Whatley quietly passed away September 16, 2012 at home after a courageous battle with Leukemia.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Zephyr & father, Wm. Herbert Whatley, sisters Lanell Dickson and Lorene Gover. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Verdean Whatley, daughter, Wanda Whatley Magown & husband, Lloyd. Grandchildren Brandy Magown Beer & husband, Jason and Jeff Magown and wife, Ashley. Great-grandchildren, Gavin & Jack Beer and Lila Magown.
Mr. Whatley is a WWII veteran serving his country in the U.S. Navy on the USS Rocky Mount. After the war, Mr. Whatley married Verdean Butler on July 3, 1947. They moved to Longview, TX in 1947 to go to work at United Gas where he retired in 1987 after 40 years with then Reliant Entex, now known as Center Point. Mr. Whatley loved the game of golf so very much and was known as a scratch golfer. He made three holes in one at Alpine over his 40+ years of playing his beloved golf.
The family would like to thank the 4th floor Good Shepard nursing staff for their special care & attention to Mr. Whatley. Also, a thank you to Hearts Way Hospice for their excellent care.
