Virginia Rose Burt's Obituary
Virginia Rose Burt
Virginia Rose Burt, a longtime resident of the Longview area and a former teacher in the Hallsville school district, died on May 21, 2012, in Dallas. She was 93 and died of natural causes after suffering a stroke on Mother's Day.
Graveside services will be Thursday, May 24, at 2 p.m. at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Longview with the Reverend Mike Schutz, Associate Minister of the First United Methodist Church of Longview officiating.
Virginia was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Ardmore, Oklahoma. She received a bachelor's degree from what is now East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma, in 1941 and began her teaching career. She married Lester Burt in 1945, just after World War II. They lived in Wichita Falls, Texas, for several years before moving to Longview with their two children, Ann and Randy. Virginia began teaching in the Hallsville school district in 1959. During her 17-year career in Hallsville, she primarily taught sixth-grade art.
After her retirement, she was often touched when former students would recognize her at the mall or grocery store and tell her what a wonderful teacher she had been.
She and Lester were members of the First United Methodist Church of Longview. After Lester died in 1992, Virginia continued to live in their home in Longview Heights before moving to Richardson, Texas, in 2011.
She is survived by daughter Ann Dillard of Dallas; son Randy Burt of Richardson; son-in-law David Dillard; daughter-in-law Amy Burt; grandchildren Emily Schroeder of Littleton, Colorado, Matthew Dillard of Plano, Texas, and Daniel Dillard of Indianapolis, Indiana; and six great-grandchildren.
