H e was born at Shreveport, Louisiana on January 8, 1941 to Sam P. and Alta Simons Scalco. Van had been a resident of Longview since 1962 having moved here from Shreveport.
Van and his wife, Vincie, owned and operated Van?s Beauty Supply for thirty years before retiring. During this period, they had five locations along with a sales staff that serviced over a hundred mile radius of Longview. He was an avid car enthusiast. About twenty-seven years ago, he rekindled a teenage dream of owning fine automobiles. Van began to buy, rebuild, and detail vehicles while making many loved friends along the way. He found success in this hobby as several of his cars received awards at different car events. After being diagnosed with cancer two years ago, he continued to rebuild cars, and the last car he completed received two awards at the Good Guys Event held at the Texas Motorplex as well as being featured in the May issue of Rod and Custom magazine. He was a regular at the Antique Mall and if he wasn?t there, his doors were open seven days a week for friends to stop in for coffee and to catch a glimpse of his latest project. Van felt fortunate to live out his dream and meet so many wonderful people along the way. During the last two years, he was overwhelmed with the love shown to him by his friends.
