Stephen Eugene Triece's Obituary
A memorial service for Steve Triece, 72, of Longview, Texas will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, September 28, 2023, at Rader Funeral Home, Longview. He departed this world after a brief illness resulting in kidney failure. He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends.
Steve was born on June 24, 1951 in Longview, Texas to Gene and Mary Ellen Triece. As a boy most of his time was spent outdoors. He always enjoyed reminiscing about riding his horse Brownie, roaming the neighborhood with his yellow lab Sandy, playing Little League baseball, and exploring the nearby woods. He attended St. Anthony School followed by Forest Park Junior High and Longview High Schools, graduating in 1969. During his teen years he held several jobs around town, one of which was at Johnny Cace’s Restaurant. Following high school, he attended East Texas State University where he pledged Delta Tau Delta Fraternity and graduated in 1973 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration. The genesis of his deepest cherished friendships took place during his Forest Park and Delt years.
He married his college sweetheart, Christy, in 1974 and the first three years of this “match made in heaven” were spent in Sikeston, Missouri where they enjoyed camping in the Ozarks and where he coached a Little League team with strong similarities to the Bad News Bears. He became a dad there when his first daughter, Kim, was born, and shortly thereafter they moved to Dallas where he began his career in banking. In 1982 his second daughter, Becky, was born and in 1985, he was given the opportunity to return to his beloved East Texas when he began working for Mbank in downtown Longview.
Steve had three great loves: his family, friends, and Texas. He was a committed husband and father, attending more dance recitals, ballet performances, and cheerleading events than he ever could have anticipated. Later, his six grandchildren were a source of great joy in his life. He loved telling stories about the things they’d done, no matter how trivial they may have seemed to others. He absolutely cherished his friends; they were truly family to him. He would talk about their deer camps or “Bubba” gatherings for weeks ahead in anticipation and for weeks after in recollections. His love for Texas began in his teenage years when he read T.R. Fehrenbach’s Lone Star. He wholeheartedly believed this was the greatest place on earth and collected everything Texas, from a personal library full of Texas history and geography books to all kinds of memorabilia and home décor.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Kim Triece Scherrer, and his parents, Mary Ellen and Gene Triece. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 49 years, Christy Jernigan Triece; daughter Becky Triece Holden and husband Brandon of Longview; son-in-law Jake Scherrer and wife Stephanie of Hallsville; grandchildren Anna Phoenix Scherrer, Jack Phoenix, and Olivia Scherrer of Hallsville; Hudson, Brady, and Mack Holden of Longview; sister Terry Triece Casey and husband John of Dallas; brother Tim Triece and wife Kim of Longview; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Susan G. Komen or Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.
