Oh my goodness.....I can't tell you how much this sweet lady meant to me and my mother when I was growing up and all through my college years. My mom and I enjoyed our weekly trips to downtown Longview to shop downtown before the mall was built. We had the same path each week starting at Fedway and worked our way down to Martin's. After lunch at Wyatt's Cafeteria, we started the afternoon shopping at Galosy's and ended with the best at Riff's. We loved Shirley and Carolyn. They were like two peas in a pod. This was many, many years ago. I lost my mom suddenly and unexpectedly to a heart attack the week-end I moved home from SFA to start my student teaching. It was the saddest time and I was so young. I remember thinking that I would never be able to walk into Riff's again without my mom. I finally got my nerve up several months later and walked into the shoe department by myself. I walked straight up to Shirley, who saw me and rushed to me with arms open wide. We cried together and it was a moment I have never forgotten. Riff's closed later on and we all moved on with our lives. When we were shopping for my daughter a prom dress about 6 years ago, we went downtown to the Prom Store. I walked straight up to Carolyn and there we were 40 years later and she recognized me. I immediately asked her about Shirley. It took me back to a wonderful and happy childhood and the 2 pretty shoe ladies at Riff's were a major part. I loved her and she loved me. God bless her wonderful soul. Thank goodness that memories are forever.
