Sam Mack, D.D.S., M.D.'s Obituary
Funeral services for Sam Mack, D.D.S., M.D., 79, longtime physician and oral surgeon, will be Twelve O?clock Noon, Monday, October 21, 2002 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Dewayne Beaty officiating. Burial will follow at Memory Park Cemetery under direction of Rader Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday, October 20th from 5 until 7 PM.
Dr. Mack was born September 23, 1923 in Marshall, Texas and had lived in Longview since the early 50?s. He completed his studies at Baylor College of Dentistry and Southwestern Medical School and served two years during the Korean War as a U.S. Air Force Captain at Lackland Air Force Base, where he headed up the burn unit.
He opened his practice in Longview in 1953 and retired in 1986. He was the first physician on the board of directors of Good Shepherd Medical Center, having previously served as chief of staff of Gregg County Memorial Hospital in 1958-59. He was president of the Longview Chamber of Commerce in 1973-74 and in 1975 he received the Jaycee?s Carl Estes Memorial Award for Outstanding Citizenship and in 1978 was presented the President?s Award from the Longview Chamber of Commerce.
His work with young people has spanned his adult life, including coaching youth baseball, serving on the Longview YMCA board of directors and as team doctor for the Longview Independent School District for 33 years. When he retired as team doctor he was presented with one of his most favorite possessions, a football letter jacket with the name "Dr. Lobo" on it.
Dr. Sam has generously given his time to many things, including the American Heart Association and the LeTourneau University Board of Trustees. He received the Longview Rotary Club?s citizen of the year award in 1989. He was a member of First Baptist Church
Survivors include his wife, Marion; sons and daughters-in-law, Chris and Lisha, Andy and Kelly, Ben and Julie Grandchildren, Alex, Spencer, Madison, Luke, Drew, Samantha and Madelyn Mack; brother, Ed Mack; sisters, Vickie Thomas and Esther Knox; Nephews, Kelly Mack and Joe Knox all of Longview; Mother-in-law, Zana Thomas and sister-in-law, Juliet Thomas both of Shaker Heights, Ohio and a niece, Rhonda Zaremba of Parma Heights, Ohio.
The family requests that memorial donations be made Greater Hospice of Texas, First Baptist Church, The ROC or to the American Heart Asso-ciation.
