Roy Stanley Whitehurst
Longview- Roy Stanley Whitehurst passed away from this life on earth to join his Heavenly Father with family at his side on Saturday, April 19, 2014, at his home in Longview, Texas. He was born on September 4th, 1928 to William and Vera Whitehurst in Linden, Texas.
Roy Whitehurst was married to Rose Evelyn Southerland Whitehurst on March 26, 1948. Together they shared 66 years of marriage and had four children.
Mr. Whitehurst was a faithful member and deacon of Valley View Baptist Church where he attended for 12 years. He was an ordained minister and officiated at several of his grandchildren’s weddings.
Roy was employed as a lineman by L.E. Myers Electrical Company for over 30 years prior to becoming a Journeyman Inside Electrician before retiring in 1989. He was a 64-year member of International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Mr. Whitehurst had a love for speed. He had a race track behind his home at which he and his bother-in-law held races. He also enjoyed watching Nascar. His favorite sport was catfishing. He annually looked forward to a weeklong fishing trip with his family and friends on Lake Bob Sandlin. He even has a sign outside at home that states “This fisherman lives with the catch of his life.”
Mr. Whitehurst was preceded in death by his parents, William and Vera Whitehurst, son, Bruce Whitehurst, daughter, Denise Powers, sister’s Isabell Gentry, Evelyn Spinks, Meltry Rainey, brothers, J.W. Whitehurst and Davis Whitehurst and great-grandchild Andy Greer.
The children left to cherish his memory are daughter, Linda Whitehurst and son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Melinda Whitehurst, and Art Powers, all of Longview, Texas.
“Pa Pa” is survived by eight grandchildren: Kevin Greer of Longview, Eric Greer and wife Kim of Rockport, TX, Shane Whitehurst and wife Casey of Longview, Brandon Whitehurst of South Lake Tahoe, CA, Jeremy Whitehurst and wife Erin of Longview, Amanda Farmer and husband Tim of Henderson, Jessica Brewster and husband Wymon of Tyler, and Kristina Woods and husband Sean of Tyler. He also leaves behind eleven great-grandchildren and a large extended family of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service for Roy S. Whitehurst will be 10 am on Monday, April 21, at Valley View Baptist Church under the direction of Radar Funeral Home, Longview, with Pastor Tim Lindsay officiating. Following the service, he will laid to rest in Memory Park Cemetery in Longview, Texas. Visitation will be Sunday evening from 6-8 pm at Radar Funeral Home.
Pallbearers for the funeral are Joe Griffin, Randy House, Mike Whitehurst, Davis Whitehurst, Jr., Stanley Gentry and Ronnie Gentry.
