Robert H. "Bobby" Smith, Sr.'s Obituary
Memorial services for Robert Henry ?Bobby? Smith, Sr., 77, of Longview will be 11 AM Monday at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church with Rev. Scott Hookey officiating under direction of Rader Funeral Home. Burial will be 10 AM Monday at Memory Park Cemetery.
Mr. Smith died Friday, April 10, 2009 at a local hospital.
He was born in Longview on May 31, 1931 the second son of Henry Louis Smith, Jr. and Elizabeth Foster Smith. His brother, Charles Louis, died in infancy.
He was a 1948 graduate of Longview High School, then received an Associates Art Degree from Kilgore College and then a Bachelor of Business Administration with a major in Insurance from the University of Texas at Austin in 1953. At that time he became associated with Gans and Smith Insurance Agency, Inc. where he had been Chairman of the Board.
He enjoyed community service, including past Director of Longview Savings and Loan Association, served three terms on the Longview City Commission and as Mayor of Longview in 1972-73, past President of Longview Association of Insurance Agents and member of the State and National Insurance Associations, past Director of the Longview Chamber of Commerce, past President of Longview Community Theater, former member and past director of Longview Rotary Club, past Community Advisor of Jr. League of Longview, Neighborhood Commissioner of Boy Scouts of America, past President of Dallas Caddo Hunting and Fishing Club, past president of Downtown Development Corporation and former member of Zoning Board of Adjustment with the City of Longview.
Mr. Smith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Longview?s Church Extension Committee which organized St. Andrew Presbyterian Church. He was a faithful charter member of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church, where he had served as Chairman of the Building Planning Council, Elder, Trustee, Sunday School teacher and member of various committees.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Nancy Rogers Smith; he was blessed with his son, Robert Henry ?Hank? Smith, Jr. and his wife, Lisa of Longview and his daughter, Susan Elizabeth Floyd and husband, JefferyJeff of Marshall, Texas; and his six grandchildren, Robert Henry ?Trevor? Smith, III of Ft. Worth, Tyler Wesley Smith of Midland, Blake Cutrer Smith of Waco, Haley Elizabeth Smith of Baton Rouge, LA, Walter Rogers Floyd of Waco, and Laura Elizabeth Floyd of Marshall.
Memorials may be made to St. Andrew Presbyterian Church or to a charity of your choice.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
